Grace and Wisdom

£590.00

Original oil painting on gesso board

Painted area 25cm x 20cm

This painting emerged from my thoughts on the symbolism of the graceful white egret - a bird that holds a long fascination for me (and clearly many others before me, given the number of stories and myths associated with it).

Across many cultures, time periods and and beliefs, the egret stands as a symbol of grace, peace and wisdom. It is linked to more than one goddess - Rhiannon, the Welsh goddess or ‘maiden of the otherworld’ and Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom (although whether the bird is an egret or a heron depends upon the storyteller). Meanwhile, the mythical two-headed egret (or heron) was considered a symbol of prosperity in ancient Egyptian and Celtic cultures.

I enjoy the mythology and symbolism, the idea of a two-headed egret, and the thought of the egret’s connection with goddesses of old. This painting is my response to this source of wonder.
