Tondo White Hart

Original oil painting on canvas-covered board

The white hart, or white stag, is a rare sight in the UK, and only a handful exist at any one time in the wild. Due their otherworldly appearance and rarity, they became a symbol of the pursuit of spiritual knowledge. Because of this, the white hart was adopted by the pious King Richard II as his personal emblem. The Celts also considered them to be messengers from the otherworld.

I created this series to elevate these British birds and animals, asking that we look again at their intrinsic worth by presenting each as a bright jewel in a gilded setting.

I wanted the character and beauty of each to shine through.

Circular painted area: 18cm diameter
Framed: 43x43cm
