Tondo Waxwing
Original oil painting on canvas covered board
The Waxwing is a striking winter visitor to the UK. Slightly smaller than a starling, it eats berries - particularly rowan (as shown here) and hawthorn.
Tondo Waxwing is one of seven paintings in my Tondo series of wildlife portraits.
I created this series to elevate these British birds and animals, asking that we look again at their intrinsic worth by presenting each as a bright jewel in a gilded setting.
I wanted the character and beauty of each to shine through.
‘Tondo’ is a Renaissance term for a circular piece of art.
Circular painted area: 18cm diameter
Framed: 43x43cm
Frame hand-gilded with 23ct gold leaf
