Tondo Hare
Original oil painting on canvas covered board
The humble brown hare is Britain’s fastest land mammal, with running speeds up to 70kph. They are linked in myth to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love.
I love the expression on this Suffolk hare’s face.
Tondo Hare is one of seven paintings in my Tondo series of wildlife portraits.
I created this series to elevate these British birds and animals, asking that we look again at their intrinsic worth by presenting each as a bright jewel in a gilded setting.
I wanted the character and beauty of each to shine through.
‘Tondo’ is a Renaissance term for a circular piece of art.
Circular painted area: 18cm diameter
